Pearlbrook is the first expansion to Everdell, which has been a huge hit for publisher Starling Games. Everdell has charmed us with its combination of charming woodland creatures, fantastic production quality and light-medium weight engine building gameplay. It’s been a joy to introduce to new players and it’s one that should see plenty more table time in our house over the coming months.
Gameplay
Pearlbrook introduces a new side board, the river board, where you'll send your frog ambassador to gather pearls. You'll also encounter new aquatic critters and constructions, with new cards for both the main deck and the river. Collect enough pearls and you can construct fabulous wonders and adornments, to make your city the pride of Everdell!
During set-up, four River Destination cards will be chosen at random and placed on the four locations on the river. Once you meet the requirements, based on cards in your tableau, you can send your frog ambassador meeple to a location to reveal it.
From then on the location is a source of the new pearl resource. Pearls are used to either build the wonders which replace the basic events of the base game, or to activate the powerful abilities of adornment cards that are dealt out to each player at the beginning of the game.
By adding a new resource into Everdell, it will be interesting to see how new paths to victory are revealed in addition to the tableau building of the base game. The adornment cards in particular seem like an addition that could add some exciting moments into the game, triggering some huge turns that should be really satisfying to play with.
Everdell: Pearlbrook - Coming Soon
I’m excited to play more Everdell with the new expansion, but more than anything I’m excited to see the beautiful artwork from Andrew Bosely extended into this underwater universe. If you’ve also been charmed by Everdell, then hopefully you can get your hands on the Pearlbrook expansion that should be coming towards the end of 2019.
In the meantime, if you're yet to play the base game and would like to learn more about it, please read Laura's review.
