At the start of a game of Dixit, each player will be dealt six random cards before taking it in turns to act as the storyteller. Whoever is chosen to be the storyteller will take a look through their six cards and choose one that they wish to have as their 'story'. The storyteller will then make up a sentence or phrase that might describe their chosen card, and say this out loud. The storyteller must not show the chosen card to the other players in the game.

After hearing the sentence or phrase, the rest of the players will choose the card from their own decks which best matches the sentence or phrase given. Each player's chosen card will then be passed over to the storyteller, without showing it to their rivals. The storyteller will then shuffle their chosen card in with the cards that were passed over by the other players. The cards will then be presented face up to everybody. All players, apart from the storyteller, will then secretly guess which picture belonged to the storyteller. This is done using numbered voting chips.

The rules are that if nobody or everybody selects the correct picture, the storyteller receives no points and everybody else scores two. Otherwise, the storyteller and all players who found the correct picture will score three points. Players can also receive one point for each vote their own picture receives. The first player to 30 points will be crowned the winner of the game.
