Ahoy! The strong winds of adventure are pushing our ships forward through the mysterious Azurite Sea, the new set of Disney Lorcana TCG. While everyone is navigating from Pack to Pack in search of the best cards, I started my adventure from the product I consider a must-have for every new set, the Illumineer's Trove. While this product has always provided a good value for its price, I think the Azurite Sea Trove is definitely the best one so far out of the 6 Chapters released for Disney Lorcana. I got mine at the Disney Store during the launch event and I am happy to share my thoughts on this great product.
Anatomy of a trove – Contents
The Azurite Sea Illumineer's Trove is designed to provide all you need in order to start playing, including a cost effective storage solution for all the cards from a set. That's because the Trove itself is a beautiful full-art storage box with two large dividers to split the cards into two rows and six smaller cardboard dividers separate all your cards by Ink colour. These last one are similar to the ones found in previous sets although this time Ravensburger placed a full art of one notable character for each Ink colour on each of these dividers. I quite love this choice and it triggered immediately a long discussion with my fellow Illumineers about “which divider/art you like better” the very second I opened the Trove. Just for the records, Stitch and Tigger got the largest amount of votes :).
In terms of gameplay, the Trove comes with 8 Booster packs, 6 themed damage-counter dices and a Lore counter. Each Booster pack includes a total of 12 cards of which 6 are common cards, 3 are Uncommons, and 2 are Rare or above. The last card of each pack is a foil version of a card of any rarity. Each pack also includes one of the 9-piece puzzle art of this set. When all pieces are put together, you will have an amazing artwork featuring Stitch and Jim Hawking sailing through the sea on their Long boat.
Stitch is clearly the main character of the set and it is also featured on booster packs together with Izma and Baymax and on the Trove box. Most important, an amazing Stitch Pirate has also been added to the Lore counter. The overall theme of the set continues also on the dice that this time are light blue. I would have loved for them to be slightly darker to be the same colour of the Trove but I think overall all the components are very well designed and very thematic.
What's hidden in your Trove?
Components and Accessories apart, the best aspect of opening a Trove is to see which cards will you pull. Out of its 8 packs, a Trove will provide a total of 96 cards including 48 Commons, 24 Uncommons, and 16 Rare, Super Rare or Legendary. The last 8 cards will be a foil version of any rarity including a chance to get an Enchanted Card. Although I did not get one, I was pretty lucky as I pulled two cards I really wanted to boost my Hyper Aggro Amber-Amethyst deck: a Legendary “Simba, Pride Protector” and a Super Rare “Lilo, Escape Artist”.
The new Simba is a Floodborn character that can shift for a cost of 3 on another Character named Simba. Its ability, “Understand the Balance”, allows a player to ready all their characters at the end of their turn as far of Simba is exerted. This ability is extremely interesting as it can be used to protect your board from challenges or can allow a player to quest twice with all their characters. This card becomes even more interesting if you consider that can be played over a “Simba, Protecting cub” that can enter play exerted as Bodyguard to trigger the Protector ability on the same turn it is played.
Similar to her counterpart from the First Chapter, the new Lilo can also quest for 2 although in this case you will need to pay a cost of 2 in order to bring her to the play field. However, the Escape Artist balance her slightly higher cost with her ability to allow a player to play this card back from the discard pile at the beginning of their turn. This is a first-seen ability in Lorcana that offers a lot of intriguing possibilities late game and can provide some advantage against Discard-based Decks.
Final thoughts – Find a Trove find a Treasure!
Personally, I love the Illumineer's Trove and I always manage to get one every time a new set releases. In terms of value, the 8 booster packs account for almost 80% of the value of the Trove considering the currently discounted prices on Zatu while all the accessories definitely make up for the rest considering in particular the extended artwork on the new Lore counter and card dividers.
In addition to its good value, the Trove is a very good product for any players as it provides everything you need in order to start play Disney Lorcana (other than a Deck of course) and then doubles as a perfect storage solution for all your cards. My personal choice is to use the Trove for my spares but nothing prevent you to use it for your main collection. Disregarding how you usually store your cards, I think the Illumineer's Trove is a very good product to have in particular if you can get it at a lower price on Zatu!
