Disney Lorcana Azurite Sea: An Interview With Koni

LORCANA CARDS

A few weeks ago, we started a new chapter in the story of Disney Lorcana with the release of “Azurite sea”, the sixth set of the amazing Trading card game published by Ravensburger. The new set features a number of very interesting cards (as you can also find out here) a new and exciting Pirate theme, is full of swashbuckling action and mysterious locations.

To kick-off this new adventure, I joined as usual the Disney Lorcana fans in London for the release party at the Disney Store in Oxford street. The team at the store were amazing and super friendly as usual and I always recommend to join them for the release of a new set if you are around. This time, I also had the amazing opportunity to meet Koni, one of the artists behind some of the new Pirate cards of this set including the iconic leader of the Disney buccaneer crew “Mickey Mouse, Pirate Captain”. Koni portfolio for Lorcana features an impressive total of 19 cards since the First Chapter including not one but three different Prince John characters.

I am personally in love with her work on “Prince John, Greediest of All” not only because is a particularly beautiful card but also because is a big staple in my Emerald-Steel deck. As you can imagine, meeting Koni has been an amazing experience and I had to ask her a few questions about her art and the cards she illustrated:

1.How it has been your experience illustrating cards for Disney Lorcana so far?

I still have a hard time realizing that I'm drawing Disney Lorcana characters! I am happy to be able to participate in this adventure! I really enjoy being able to illustrate characters from the Disney universe that brings back many memories.

2. You made so many beautiful cards, and I have to ask: which one is your favourite and why?

It's hard for me to choose one because they all have something that makes me love them. I would say "Prince John, Greediest of All" because he is my favourite character from my childhood. When I created the illustration, it really inspired me to remember my childhood memories. Best of all, this is also the first Disney Lorcana costume I've made, so this card, this costume and this character means a lot to me.

3. You also illustrated a lot of cards for the new set. How was taking well-known characters and fit them into the pirate theme of Azurite sea?

I wouldn't say it was difficult but more that it was a real challenge! Especially for Mickey, he is the iconic Disney character, so the design of his costume had to be well balanced! I really enjoyed this chapter for this pirate transposition, it was a lot of fun to illustrate!

4. Are you a big fan of Disney and is there a character you would really like to draw in the future?

Like many people of my generation, we grew up with the Disney universe and I have a lot of memories linked to these films, they are characters, so yes you can say that I am a Disney fan. I would appreciate the opportunity to work on a villain like Hades, Cruella or Maleficent. They are very charismatic! But with the announcement of the arrival of Pixar films in Disney Lorcana, I admit that I dream of making a Coco card! I am in love with this animated film, I love the universe, the atmosphere, the characters and all these colours. Fingers crossed!

A Pixar card featuring Coco would be indeed an amazing addition to Disney Lorcana and I also hope we will see one soon. I also hope we will have a chance to meet Koni again in other Disney Lorcana events and to have a chance to find out more about her cards and upcoming projects. In the meantime, why you don't start following Koni on her socials here below?
