Fantasy Flight Games are known for keeping their big new releases as well guarded secrets. They are one of the only publishers who don’t make announcements in advance of Gen Con each year. This year, one of the biggest announcements at their press conference was KeyForge – which begins a line of ‘Unique Games’ – games where every single copy of the game is unique. This is a wonder of printing technology, but it has been met with some scepticism in the gaming community regarding balance and play-testing.
I’m certainly intrigued by this concept and I'm with-holding judgement. KeyForge, as a collectable card game, hasn’t really picked up my interest, but the next ‘Unique Game’, Discover Lands Unknown, has me really intrigued with the art, the theme and a the mystery surrounding this ‘Unique Game’ concept.
The Gameplay
When two to four players find themselves marooned in the harsh wilderness, you must co-operate and compete to search for water, food, and tools that will be essential to your very survival. Since every copy of Discover Lands Unknown is unique – you may find yourself in a forest, whilst a friend with another copy of the game may be exploring snowy mountain tops.
The game includes five scenarios – four of which are linked into a larger story arc. Each scenario is made up of quests that will guide you through a story line, whilst you also try and meet your basic needs for survival.
Without wanting to spoil too much about the game, images of Discover Lands Unknown remind me a scaled back version of The 7th Continent, perhaps combined with some of the theme of Robinson Crusoe. These are both great games, and if this is indeed a more streamlined but similar experience than I’m very interested.
Discover Lands Unknown - Coming Soon
Whilst some of the details of the game are still unknown, the beautiful artwork, intriguing concept and highly produced trailer video for the game are enough to whet our appetite. Discover Lands Unknown should be released in the fourth quarter of 2018.
