Cyberpunk 2077 – Afterlife: The Card Game

Cyberpunk 2077 - Afterlife The Card Game Revealed

When CMON makes a game based on a video game, they absolutely nail it. Their interpretation of Bloodborne through Bloodborne: The Card Game gave players the feel of being hunters in the streets of Yharnam. And although it wasn't tied to the story directly, it still gave a great experience! That's probably because it was based on the video game but wasn't the same. A new take on it, if you will! Their Kickstarter for Bloodborne: The Board Game looks incredibly intricate and mechanically sound too. Lots of thought and attention to detail considered throughout.

With the recent announcement that CMON will be taking on another big franchise, excitement is high. Knowing it's one that isn't even released yet makes it all the more mysterious and noteworthy! Cyberpunk 2077 - Afterlife: The Card Game will be released in 2020 and will be a competitive drafting, hand management game. It’s being developed by Eric M. Lang, the man behind Rising Sun, The Others and other great games!

What We Know

The game is set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077, the video game. There will still be all the nastiness you'd expect in a chrome-infused dystopian future. A land with few laws and a place for the lawless. Luckily, you won't be entering the underbelly of the city yourself. Unlike in the video game counterpart, you don't play as a cyberpunk. You play as a Fixer, someone who fixes "problems". A data broker, a mastermind, a megalomaniac... Effectively, you're a someone who gets a problem, hires the muscle to sort it, and get the biggest cut of cash.

As Cyberpunk 2077 - Afterlife: The Card Game progresses, you, and your competing fixers, will hire cyberpunks to go on missions and complete tasks. There will be a need to choose the right person for the right job, and competition to hire people will be tight. To ensure your hired goons manage their tasks, you also need to equip them appropriately. If they're going to encounter hostility, they'll probably want protection! Again, more competition to buy the gear first.

Now, this is immediately all becoming very expensive! Cyberpunks will need paying and gear probably won't last forever...Which introduces one of the main elements of the game: money. As a player, you'll need to balance what you're spending on hiring cyberpunks and gear against the income from missions. Cards can always be sacrificed for quick cash, however the longevity of a cyberpunk can very quickly become a bonus! In an interesting twist, by keeping these rascals alive they can benefit and influence how new recruits play! This makes it worth equipping those daring metal-men appropriately.

Initial Thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077

Not much has been given away from the outset other than the pretence and ideas within. However, from that alone the game looks and sounds solid. You spend money to make money as a baseline. But remember! It's going to be who and what you spend it on that will make you the greatest fixer around! Keeping your cyberpunks alive and equipped will give you the edge, and will no doubt earn you a solid reputation.

Sadly this version is unlikely to have a Keanu Reeves drop in, but all's not lost! The gorgeously gritty art-styles that CMON are known for will entice anyone with an eye for theme. Plus, the solid gameplay their games are know for give enough faith to know that, if they're going to do this, they should do it well!
