There is one thing deck-builders aren't short of. Variety. They come in all shapes, sizes, themes and flavours. Whether you're wanting to defeat evil villains or escape aliens, master an economy or steal valuables, deck-builders are a go to! What's more is that there is scope for action within them too! It's not all probability of card collection, many include lots of extra mechanics and elements which add depth. You could even push it to say adventure! Clank! and Clank! In! Space! are two such deck-builders. You build a deck and you need to steal from something wicked without being heard. Move awkwardly and make a noise, and you're toast!
Clank! In! Space! by Renegade Game Studios has a completely different theme from Clank! without too many huge changes. Other than you're in space (the clue's in the title) it has a modular board and a tonne of sci-fi and pop culture references. All stuff we can agree is great! Well, it now has something more! Another expansion has been announced and is expected be available in the near future. Cyber Station 11 adds a new board, new board modules, new cards, a new villain and more!
What We Know
The expansion is centred around a new villain - Commander Preon. She's eager to let the head honcho Lord Eradikus know she's of great value and make an impression. What better way is there to do that than to catch the thieves who regularly steal from his Greatness? It all takes place on her research station which is way out on the edge of nowhere on Cyber Station 11. There, she and her cronies are developing cybernetic enhancements and augmentations to improve the conquest of the evil lord. (Naturally she's keeping the best bits to improve her own robot fixtures first!)
Cyber Station 11 adds more of what's known from Clank! In! Space! There are the obvious differences in both the board, villain and card additions, but not so much that the learning curve would be steep! It looks to be more of an optionally added expansion with new elements over one that's integrated into the core game, which I think is good! It’s not designed revolutionise core gameplay with extras permanently, but instead give a new adventure when used.
Cyber Station 11 will allow players to gain abilities throughout the game using these cybernetic enhancements. The abilities gained here will last the whole game too, making them more covetable than others! The villain and her henchmen will no doubt be even more dangerous than what's been faced before. They're cyborgs after all! Luckily, the game also introduces Executive Escape Pod tokens so you can make a getaway in style.
Our First Thoughts on Cyber Station 11
Choosing to buy an expansion can be a tricky thing to do. Particularly when they add new bits into a game - it can be very hit and miss. Sometimes they add tonnes of extras for the experienced player but can scare a newbie. Other times they add those convenient fixes and smooth gameplay out without changing much. Clank! In! Space! Cyber Station 11 looks to do neither. It's more stealing from a villain! An expansion you choose to use to specifically ruin someone else's day! A new stage for the beauty that is Clank! In! Space!
