Citadel Colour Painting Handle Review

citadel colour painting handle

Painting miniatures is a fiddley thing. Especially with giant clumsy hands like I was blessed with. Painters usually have their own makeshift methods of keeping their precious miniatures steady and free from obstruction. Some use blue-tac on the end of bottle corks. Some add a wire and hold in pliers. Some even just hold with their hands, getting paint everywhere. Citadel, owned by Game Workshop, the master of all things Warhammer has become the brand of choice for many painters and there is a good reason. They know what they are talking about! Especially with the Citadel Colour Painting Handle.

They have released painting handles before but they were large and cumbersome and although secure, were not the easiest things to use. Their newest range, however, is much sleeker in design. The spring loaded top will hold bases from 25mm through to 40mm and on the whole is fairly secure.

However due the thin lip, there for easier access to base painting, it can often allow the miniature to pop off. If you are a light, delicate painter then this will be more than strong enough, but if you are a little heavier handed you might want to be a little more careful with this one. The grip is more ergonomic than its predecessor, sitting comfortably in your palm for fatigue-free marathon painting sessions. And it really is comfortable in the hand and much lighter than other options.

The redesigned shape of the base improves the balance and distribution of weight too so it can be taller, giving much easier access to the undersides. It also allows much more light to hit the model making those hard to see places easier to paint. If you are a regular painter, whether war games or board game minis the this is a no brainer. It is definitely the most comfortable option. And if you are new to painting and intimidated as to where to start then it is a no brainer.

At this low price point, it will make your life so much easier in the long run. You only really need to paint a few models to justify its purchase. Miniature painting can be a wonderfully meditative and rewarding experience and so making it as comfortable and easy as possible would definitely be top of my list.
