As the festive season approaches, it’s time to start planning how to keep the family entertained and merry on Christmas day.
Most will bring out the traditional board games - Monopoly…Pictionary…Scattergories…and the arguments will unfold.
But this year, why not mix it up with some fresh options?
Today, I am going to list a few party games that you should think about adding to your Christmas collection. These are not as mainstream, cause a lot less arguments, but still pack a punch!
Sushi Go
Sushi Go is a card drafting game where points are collected through the pairing and collecting of various traditional Japanese dishes.
Sushi Go is a fast-paced card game, where the goal is to grab the best combination of sushi dishes as they whiz by. This means, each round will produce a different set of cards, which is what keeps the game so exhilarating.
Gather the most points and declare yourself a sushi master.
Not only is the game fun and engaging, the graphics are also super adorable!
This game is easy to explain to those unfamiliar with more difficult mechanisms, making a superb choice for family Christmas! Say goodbye to the painful experience of explaining rules to your opponents for them only to ask slly questions 2 minutes into the game.
Colorful
This is one of my personal favourites, as it is down to subjectivity and always causes a healthy debate.
The game is about matching colour choices with the other player prompted by a random noun. For example, your teammate may randomly select the card “Candy” and then ask everyone to pick which single colour they associate with “Haribo’s”.
I immediately think of navy blue, but some may think of red, or even white. This is what makes the game so fun because sometimes you sit back and cannot actually comprehend how someone can think so differently to you.
The issue is, when one person chooses wrong, everyone loses!
Dixit
To begin, Dixit has one of the most gorgeously designed sets of cards I have ever seen. Whenever we bring the game to a gathering or occasion, someone is guaranteed to comment on the stunning aesthetics.
Each turn in Dixit, one player is the storyteller who chooses one of the six cards in his or her hand, then expresses an idea, with sounds or words, that is reflected on that card's image, and places the card face down on the playing surface. Each other player then selects the card in his or her hand that best matches that notion.
All players must then select which card is the original.
Some may consider it a game of luck, but the creativity and interpretation involved make it captivating for everyone, adding a magical and imaginative element to your gathering.
Sheriff of Nottingham
Lie. Cheat. Accuse.
Do anything you can possibly do to win! All morals and allegiances go out the window when it comes to the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Players declare goods they wish to bring into the city, these range from cheese and chicken to illegal contraband. These goods are secretly stored in their burlap sack. The Sheriff (one of your players) must then determine who gets into the city with their goods, who gets inspected, and who may have their goods confiscated.
I think Sheriff of Nottingham makes an excellent Christmas game as it encourages lots of laughter, bluffing, and deceit. Nothing is funnier than watching one of your family/friends sweating under the pressure of accusation, right?!
This game separates the fakes and frauds, so make sure you bring your best poker face!
Conclusion
I hope these party games make a great addition to your wishlist, and create some fond Christmas memories for you and your loved ones of the festive period. They sure have for me.
After all, there’s no better time than Christmas to gather together for a bit of laughter, fun, and a healthy dose of competition. Happy gaming!
