The word 'anniversary' can bring both pleasure and pain. It can be a time of celebration, an opportunity to recall all the wonderful memories associated with someone or something you love. It can be a time of terror if, for example, you’ve forgotten a very specific and important date, an opportunity to sleep with one eye open and employ a taste tester for your food. Lucky I’ve got an anniversary we can all enjoy without fear of
Champions of Midgard from Grey Fox Games is a middleweight, Viking-themed, worker placement game for 2-4 players with dice rolling in which players are leaders of Viking clans who have travelled to an embattled Viking harbour town to help defend it against the threat of trolls, draugr, and other mythological Norse beasts. By defeating these epic creatures, players gain glory and the favour of the gods. When the game ends, the player who has earned the most glory earns the title of Jarl and is recognized as a champion of Midgard. Placing workers allows for the collection of resources and warriors, which players may then send on journeys to neighbouring villages or across the sea to defeat monsters and gain the glory they need for victory. Resources are used to carve runes, build ships, and feed your followers. Viking warriors (custom dice) do battle with the myriad enemies the town faces.
But you knew all of this already. You’re here for the juicy, luxurious details of this crowdfunding campaign.
This tenth anniversary edition will include the base game (obvs), two expansions and dozens of promos, all rebalanced and together at last in one complete box. Here's the thing: it's only through this Kickstarter that you can get your hands on this edition. There will be one printing, and that's your whack. Each will contain a numbered certificate of authenticity. This definitive set will have all new high-end upgraded components, brand new monster and leader illustrations and lush new double-sided neoprene game mat. It's a big box with a big price, and it will be one of the prizes of your collection.
There’s custom coins, 71 custom iridescent beautiful dice, a bespoke tray for said dice, a resource tray in the shape of a Viking shield for the various wooden tokens, dark wash Viking ship miniatures, a sweet dice tower (don’t get enough thematic dice towers in games if you ask me), and a range of acrylic character standees and tokens. No joke, this one's got deluxe horns. I've always wanted a deluxe horn. Helmets too. It's got excellent helmets. Every element of the game has been elevated. This is as good as Champions of Midgard is going to get.
If you don’t fancy going all in on the Champions of Midgard Collector’s Edition (after all, the price might make you wince), there is a Deluxe version which scales back the luxury but still has all the gameplay content of the Collector’s Edition. There’s also an Upgrade Kit and a complete Promos set available if you’re looking to keep hold of your original copy. Head on over to this page, and start dreaming about how this would look on your table…
