CARCASSONNE HISTORY
Carcassonne games are some of the most recognisable in the tabletop world. The series is designed by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and was first published in 2000. The series is named after the medieval town in southern France, which is famed for its city walls. Carcassonne is a tile-laying game, which sees players competing to gain followers as they build-up the land. Carcassonne games have won various different awards since the launch of the original. The game now has several expansions, spin-offs and video game adaptations. Some of the most popular expansions include Traders & Builders and Inns & Cathedrals. Carcassonne is a beloved 'gateway game' due to its simple rules, quick playtime and the fact that nobody is eliminated from the game. This means that new players can soon get to grips with the game.
CARCASSONNE FRANCHISE
The original Carcassonne board game was released in 2000 and was published by Rio Grande Games. Z-Man Games have been publishing Carcassonne games since 2012. The base game won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in 2001, as well as the Deutscher Spiele Preis. A 'refresh' edition of the game arrived in 2015, featuring updated artwork on the tiles and on the box. Over the years, we've seen a range of expansions such as Inns & Cathedrals and Princess & The Dragon. There are also several mini-expansions, which add extra tiles to the base games. In 2006, a video game version of the original Carcassonne was released on the Xbox 360 Marketplace.

Carcassonne games are all about tile-laying. Players build the landscape as the game progresses, by placing tiles face-up onto the playing area. You must place each tile so that it extends the features on the tiles it touches. For example, roads need to connect to roads and fields need to connect to fields. After placing a tile, a player may station a follower on a feature of the new tile. Once the last tile has been placed, the game ends and scoring takes place. All features score points for the players who have the most followers on them. The player with the most points wins the game.
