We all have to meet our match sometime or other. Bush's Board Game Thing sees Andy Bush celebrating board games and the experience of gaming with friends Eloise Carr and Brian Murphy. Each week, expect passion, enthusiasm, and multiple trips through gaming wormholes. This podcast is powered by Zatu - we're making sure the board game cogs keep on turning. Each week, I'll be bringing you the best bits here on the blog and letting you shop the podcast! Bush's Board Game Thing Episode 28 is all about games surrounding animals, and more specifically, games surrounding battling animals.

Do you have something that you'd like to share with the team? Maybe a great board game idea? Even when and where you like to listen to the podcast, set the scene. Email [email protected] if you want to get involved with the podcast. For example, if you have any board game disputes, let Andy and co get to the bottom of it!

It could be battling Sheep, protecting the wilderness from creatures, or even feeding some hungry, hungry hippos! This week Andy, Jess, and Brian will be talking about their favourite animal duelling games. Let's delve into the week's episode of Bush's Board Game Thing!

Root

Root is an adventure game, where the aim of players is to protect the vast wilderness from an evil feline dictator. Marquis de Cat and his squadron police the area, however, the creatures of the forest have formed an alliance to try to reclaim the land back. It is your role to help them. Do this by using recruiting, moving, battling, and building tactics, as instructed by The Decree.

Part of Root's charm is its beautifully designed board, cards, and its adorable wooden cat figures. Fans admire its earthly theme and thoroughly enjoy its detailed and complex components. Root is an excellent game for beginners looking to move onto board games beyond your average Monopoly or Cluedo. While it is fairly complicated, this means it is immersive enough to really get a player's imagination and competitive side out.

Everdell

Just like Root, Everdell is a game to gaze at. Its board is illustrated meticulously and beautifully. On top of that, it comes with an amazing 3D cardboard tree to truly bring the board to life. Everdell is a building game. It can be used as a solo game or played with up to four players. The aim is to obtain resources for the city you are attempting to build in the forests valley of Everdell.

The resources also come as 3D attributes. Whether it's shiny orange gemstones or smooth grey rocks, you need these resources and must complete goals set out by the cards to claim these and victory points. Everdell is ideal for those looking for a strategic and plot heavy game, but one that isn't so serious and even has an upbeat, whimsical nature to it.

Dominant Species

When you shake the box of Dominant Species it will rattle. This is because we have another game here with excellent 3D game pieces. There are overall 450 pieces in a Dominant Species box! This is because the aim of the game is to spread your species out as far as you can on earth as possible as an ice age sets in. Each player is designated a species, either amphibians, arachnids, birds, insects, mammals, or reptiles and you win by obtaining the most victory points. These can be grabbed by moving around the board or eliminating other species. By doing this, you dominant the species.

Dominant Species is an engaging game for both longtime gamers and rookies. The board and rules are detailed yet straightforward. The actual board is tantalising, what with its 100s of wooden pieces and 8 hexagon shaped tiles representing areas of the globe such as 'Jungle' and 'Desert.' Can your species dominant them all..?
