Altered: Trial By Frost Announced

Hot (or should I say cold) on the heels of the worldwide release of Altered, which seems to be getting off to a great start, we’ve just had news of the games first expansion, Trial by Frost!

As our heroes and companions continue their expeditions further into uncharted territory, they come across a glacial landscape, the Cais Adarra. Apart from some truly stunning snow themed artwork on the playing cards and adventure cards, we’re also getting a new type of Permanent, ‘Gear’. Gear sits in your expedition zones like a character, but as it’s a permanent it does not go to your reserve during the night phase, instead they stick around to help out. We’ve only seen one example so far but it’s definitely intriguing what they could do with that kind of mechanic.

So will there be new starter decks? It doesn’t seem so. I don’t know how often they will release new starter sets, but I imagine not for a few expansions yet. We’ll be getting all new boosters for Trial by Frost, and now 1 in every 5 boosters will contain one of the new adventure cards. No need to have them all before you use them, just mix and match them with the cards you already have, just to mix up your games a bit more as you wait to collect them all.

Trial by Frost will be released January 31, 2025.
