This week has been full of casting announcements! Many beloved games are getting adapted into some of the most anticipated film and TV projects. From The Last of Us to Borderlands, we'll be bringing you the latest updates of the video games making the jump to our TV screens.
The Last of Us
One of the most cinematic games out there, The Last of Us has been picked up by HBO for a tie-in TV series. The series will take place following the events of the first game, filling in the time jump seen in The Last of Us Part II. Written by Craig Martin of Chernobyl fame, The Last of Us adaption will also be scripted by Neil Druckmann, the man behind the 2020 sequel.
For those unfamiliar with the series, The Last of us follows grizzled survivor Joel as he navigates an apocalyptic America, 20 years after a zombie pandemic swept the world. Joel is tasked to transport Ellie across the country in the hopes of developing a cure. You can find out more about the series in our reviews of both The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II.
There might not be a release date for the series but it has found it's two leading actors. Embodying the stern yet lovable Joel will be Pedro Pascal. Known for his roles in The Mandalorian and Narcos, Pascal will be leading the ever-growing conflict against the Fireflies. Fan-favourite Ellie will be played by Bella Ramsey. A breakout star of Game of Thrones, Ramsey is most known for playing the heroic Lyanna Mormont throughout the series. Ellie has only known the world to be full of death and destruction, the 14-year-old orphan is the heart of this story and is certain to be a scene-stealer in the upcoming series.
Borderlands
Another game getting the Hollywood treatment is that of Borderlands. First released in 2009, the Borderlands franchise is a series of action-packed shooter-looter games.
The trilogy will be adapted for the big screen by the controversial Eli Roth. Roth is most known for his work on Hostel alongside other staples in the horror genre. Most recently, however, Roth directed the family blockbuster, The House with a Clock in its Walls.
Not much is known about the adaptation but it is receiving a star-studded cast! Cate Blanchett has been confirmed to take on the role of Lillith, the thief-siren that will lead the action in the adaption. Joining her will be Jack Black as the sarcastic robot Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as archaeologist Tannis and Kevin Hart as soldier Roland. With many of the stars working together in either The House with a Clock in its Walls or Jumanji, this is certainly one to watch.
Tomb Raider 2
Lara Croft is currently celebrating her 25th anniversary with the green light for a sequel! Based upon the 2013 reboot game Tomb Raider, the film of the same name was released in 2018. Starring Alicia Vikander, the film is now working towards a sequel.
Not much is known about the film and whether it will follow the storyline of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Reprising her role as Ana Miller, Kristen Scott Thomas will return as the somewhat shady head of Croft Industries.
