2020 has certainly given us more tricks than treats. With Halloween fast approaching, many of us might be looking for an alternative way to spend this spooky season. As an avid horror fan, I have put together a list of my top 13 fearsome Halloween video games. From jump scares and VR to deciding who will live and die, this top 13 will make sure that everyone has a fright or two in store for them...
For the Film Fanatics
Dead by Daylight
The first of my top Halloween video games, Dead by Daylight, will offer you 2 options: escape or kill. This asymmetrical horror game will task one player with becoming a brutal Killer whilst 4 other players will play as Survivors. The biggest draw for this game is that of the Killers. This line-up of villains will make any horror fan's heart soar. From Scream's Ghostface and Stranger Things' Demogorgon to horror icons Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. Not only do you get to play as these villains, you'll also get the chance to explore their worlds.
For example, the game boasts a SAW collection in which you can play as the iconic Pig from the franchise, as well as exploring the Gideon Meat Plant in which the films are based. The survivors on offer are also added to. Characters such as David Tapp and Ash of Evil Dead fame will be added alongside their nemeses. If you love your scary movies, this game lets you go one step further!
The Haunting of Verdansk in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Even Call of Duty is getting involved with Halloween this year! In Warzone's first-ever Halloween experience, Battle Royale and Plunder are thrown into darkness and the paranormal. As well as re-introducing zombies, The Haunting of Verdansk also adds The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and SAW to its ranks. Both Billy the Puppet and Leatherface become skins for your operators wielding a whole host of exclusives to boot. When you explore the streets of Verdansk, you'll be in for quite a fright. Ghosts roam free and the infamous laughter of Billy the Puppet can be heard in every building. Stay alert though, those supply boxes can hold some terrifying tricks. The Haunting of Verdansk will be available with Call of Duty: Warzone until the 3rd of November so don't miss out!
Resident Evil: Biohazard
This franchise started off life as a PlayStation exclusive in 1996. Since then, many games and films have spawned, only growing the franchise's popularity. One of the highest regarded entries is Resident Evil: Biohazard. Acting as the 7th entry, Biohazard debuted in 2017 but has cemented itself as a horror classic. You fill the shoes of Ethan Winters, a man sent to the depths of a decrepit mansion in the heart of a Louisiana bayou, in search of his wife who has been missing for 3 years. At the mercy of the infamous Baker family, Ethan must battle the monsters that await him in this horrific swamp. Resident Evil 7 is not for the faint of heart but will be sure to get your blood pumping.
For the Story Tellers
Until Dawn
The Butterfly Effect is the idea that every choice you make will have an impact on your future. That a butterfly's wings could one day cause a hurricane. Supermassive Games' Until Dawn will take every choice that you make in your terrifying search for answers - even the seemingly trivial ones. You carve out your own unique story on Blackwood Mountain. Eight friends are trapped on a remote mountain retreat when things quickly take a sinister turn as they suspect that they aren't alone. You'll join this star-studded cast that includes Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek as you battle the twists and turns of Until Dawn and fight to survive the night.
The Walking Dead Telltale Definitive Series
Similar in theory to Until Dawn's Butterfly Effect, Telltale's The Walking Dead follows Clementine as she grows from a scared little girl to a capable survivor. It offers a completely unique perspective from the TV and comic series that create the world of The Walking Dead, although you might spot a few familiar faces. This episodic series first started in 2012 and recently finished in 2019. This Halloween, you can embark on Clementine's fight for survival amongst Walkers and other survivors. Characters will remember your choices, so your decisions in the earliest seasons may just come back to bite you in the end game.
For the Immersive Individuals
Remothered: Broken Porcelain
Get ready for an emotional journey of horror, tragedy, and true love with Remothered: Broken Porcelain. Step back into Ashmann Inn as you relive events from the characters' painful past during intense flashbacks. This award-winning survival horror series tasks you with uncovering the truth hidden within Ashmann Inn's walls whilst also facing the looming threat of powerful hunters trapped in time. The Remothered series is all about knowing the best time to sneak, flee or fight the imminent dangers that lurk in these hallowed halls. Can you escape this mysterious and decaying tomb?
Darkest Dungeon
A challenging gothic turn-based RPG, Darkest Dungeon might just be what you need this Hallow's Eve. Exploring the psychological stresses of adventuring, Darkest Dungeon sees you assembling a team of flawed heroes through twisted forests, forgotten warrens, and ruined crypts. Not only will you recruit, train and lead your heroes, you'll be battling unimaginable foes, stress, famine, disease and the ever-encroaching dark. The fearsome monsters that await your arrival are only the beginning of the eldritch horrors erupting from your family's ancestral estate. The striking hand-drawn gothic crowquill art style will ensure that you will be fully immersed on the 31st of October.
For the Demon Hunters
The Evil Within
The embodiment of pure horror survival, The Evil Within blends its highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety and intricate story to create an immersive world that will bring you to the height of tension. Whilst investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, detective Sebastian Castellanos encounters a powerful force that will see him wandering amongst the dead. You must control Sebastian in this third-person survival horror as he faces unimaginable terrors whilst fighting for his life. This entry is not for the faint-hearted; this brutal and twisted world is a formidable one, even on a list of Halloween video games.
Monstrum
Created by Team Junkfish, Monstrum is a first person survival horror game with one goal... escape! You will find yourself stranded aboard a vast, derelict ship which is filled with dangerous traps that will hinder your escape from the terrifyingly deadly beast that stalks you. Monstrum sets itself apart from the pack of Halloween video games by offering a procedurally generated mechanic. In each playthrough, players will face new fears each turn as well as inventing new tactics. The Brute, Fiend, and Hunter are the 3 monsters that will take turns in hindering your escape from this abandoned cargo ship.
Bloodborne
From Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware, Bloodborne follows in the footsteps of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Bloodborne is an all-new, action-packed RPG brimming with unforgiving, unrelenting terror. Prepare to face your fears as you search for answers in the ancient city of Yharnam, which is plagued by an endemic illness that is spreading through its inhabitants like wildfire. Danger is an ever-present shadow in this horrific world. Only uncovering the darkest secrets will grant you freedom.
For the VR Veterans
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood VR
Thorpe Park and Alton Towers are quite a trek, so why not take a ride on this roller-coaster from hell. Coming from the same minds that brought you Until Dawn, Rush of Blood uses virtual reality to strike fear into the hearts of every trigger-happy arcade shooter fan. You'll be blasting your way through a horde of enemies and monsters across 7 terrifying levels. Explore various paths that each embody different nightmarish themes and get ready to jump. After all, no two rides will ever be the same - and neither will you!
Here They Lie VR
If jumpscares are not your thing, maybe testing your psychological limits will be. Here They Lie will descend you into a monochromatic cityscape where sinister creatures lurk around every corner. As well as keeping both eyes open, you'll have to wrestle with life-or-death choices and your own morality. The only beacon of light in this city is the mysterious woman in yellow. You must uncover who she is and why she walks these streets. This is an experience that will root itself in your psyche and fester long after its conclusion, a worthy addition to our top Halloween video games.
Batman: Arkham VR
Last but not least on my list of Halloween video games: experience Gotham in a whole new way with Batman: Arkham VR. Set in between the events of Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight, this VR addition immerses you into the Dark Knight's universe through the eyes of the World's Greatest Detective. Showing the psychological toying of the Joker, this VR experience takes you on a nightmarish quest for answers. With Scarecrow, Killer Croc and Penguin on the loose, this will be one night in Gotham that you will never forget...
