Onslaught - Sellswords One - Preparation:
Make better use of that dining table with Onslaught core set and the Sellswords one team. Thats right, swords for hire, mercenaries, the scum of the sewers. The expansion works with the core box set but with a few additional conditions tokens and runes depending on the character used from the four new characters to play with, where this team’s members can jump in with any faction and swap with a faction member where the scenario requirements don’t play well to their skill set or to add a little variety.
Onslaught – Sellswords one holds to the core rules with some minor changes in character possibilities and abilities but follows the of operational rules of Onslaught, and you may need to brush up on the rule book and scenarios up front, particularly if it’s been a while, so that the games mechanics are understood. This is well covered in the Onslaught rulebook and scenarios booklet, and the scenario book has a step by step walk through as an example if you are still a little rusty on the details. A summary leaflet is supplied with the Sellswords one expansion pack for the character variances.
Onslaught – Sellswords one at Play:
The expansion is designed to play as a head-to-head two player game as with the original core set, where scenarios are set with objectives, where victory points are awarded for meeting key objectives including dispatching the enemy player, some monsters or completing the task set in the scenario. The winner is the player with the most victory points after the allotted number of rounds or completing the main objective. The order of play is decided by randomly selecting initiative cards where each player gets to have the first action alternatively, whether that be a strike, hide or run back to Candlekeep. Combat is conducted in a traditional D&D dice throwing, although with an interesting twist to accept standard ability capability and cover elements such as elevation and limited line of sight. Hit points and damage points are scaled down for this game compared to the role playing with a Dungeon Master model as with the Onslaught core box set. Be careful though! You might take out the monsters, just for the enemy to finish you off, so no shame in dropping the enemy in hot water with the monsters, while you grab the loot and there is some good stuff hiding in those chests. The Sellswords one characters swap out a faction member in your faction, so you can balance the faction to fit the needs of the faction or for the scenario at hand. So, if you need a bit more hustle, magic, muscle, or stealth in your team go check them out.
Cards, Miniature, Scenario’s, and Tokens
The Sellswords one expansion relies on the Onslaught box core set box and other expansions to provide a base for a variety of enemy / hero, levelling up, monster, operation & treasure cards. The Sellswords one – brings a mixture of four-character cards with dials and eight levelling up cards. These are mostly, nicely designed with the key elements included with consistent text and symbols used for the game. You may need some means to keep them contained to minimise wear and prevent accidental damage. Four pre-painted miniatures are supplied with the Sellswords one expansion which are nicely detailed and appropriate for the characters they portray.
Onslaught - Sellswords one expansion, includes a leaflet detailing the character skills & abilities but relies on the core scenario to provide a walk through to aid explaining environments, combat, monsters, movement & treasure etc. The characters can be used in all the scenario’s encompassing all the elements supplied with the Core, Maps & Monster Expansion and Scenario Benefactor Set and allow you to replay with different strengths or weaknesses of your faction to the limit of the new characters. The expansion also includes sixteen ability and conditions tokens relevant to the new characters.
‘WHO DARES WAKE ME FROM MY SLUMBER’ growled the black dragon.
Paladin: ‘I awake you, please be warned of a deceitful tricksy white wizard who wonders unseen in your lair and means to do you harm.’
White Wizard: ‘You! Traitorous snake’ … ‘Doh!’
‘KILL THEM ALL AND BRING ME THE SHINY SWORD, IT WILL MAKE AN EXCELLENT TOOTHPICK’ growled the black dragon.
It was at this point it dawned on the young Paladin that he had made the worst two decisions of his life today. Running into a dragon’s lair with his loudest and best war cry ever, but more importantly swapping the cloak of concealment with the white wizard at lunch, for the nice shiny sword. Well at least the dragon could use it as a nice toothpick.
