Sea Beasts Announced!

I don’t know about you, but I love the sea. Need to recharge the ole batteries? Get yourself down the beach asap and let the susurration of the waves soothe you. Even better, hop on a ship or a boat and let the bobbing waters lull your blues away. Nothing can beat a ship on the ocean when it comes to feeling at peace for the world. Although, this can depend on what’s in the ocean around you, and who else you’ve got on board. You could, for example, be surrounded by Vikings who love nothing better than a good battle with whichever sea monsters choose to hunt your vessel. Yes, sea monsters. Perhaps I should have booked a different cruise…

Sea Beasts is a cooperative ocean crawler/boss battler from Littlest Lantern Games. You’re looking at a replayable campaign that runs upwards of twenty five hours, featuring evolving gaming and leaving a lasting legacy. There’ll be branching storylines, and don’t worry about the need to have the same full group of players for every part of the game as it will feature a drop in and drop out mechanic. The player-characters will play asymmetrically with unique weapons and capabilities. It’s an unpredictable life on the sea, so expect unforeseen events, shifting sea lanes and beasts that constantly evolve. Like any self-respecting Viking you’ll be able to build up a Blood Rage that will increase as you draw the enemy creature’s blood – sounds like it might pay to be aggressive – and you can use this power to unleash devastating attacks.

Sorry to say, but you will be ambushed by the Kraken, the Ancient Horror (who’s got a hint of Godzilla about him), a Giant Crustacean, a Sea Dragon and more challenging opponents. On the Viking side of things you can play as the Archer, the Boatman, the Warrior and the Mystic amongst others, all with their own stats and advantages.

There isn’t just a campaign either, you’ve got the option of quick play voyages which can take 15 to 45 minutes, so there’s a way to play that suits any window you’ve got. One mechanic I’m really keen on is the three separate decks you’ll play with. There’s a Shallow Deck, a Deep Deck, and an Abyss Deck, representing the progress of your journey. You’ll start in shallow waters, and the challenge will increase as you move through the decks. Remember, the biggest, baddest opponents dwell in the darkness of the abyss…

In the pricier pledges you’ll get some great not-so-miniatures of the Sea Beasts you’ll face, each one over three times the size of your Viking meeple. They’re a big jump from the fine components of the base game, but only you can decide if your wallet can take the hit. There’s also an expansion available to add on, called The Wilderness, which adds two extra playable characters and an additional mystery beast…
