An Interview With Kasia Brzezinska

SHIMMERING SKIES

Next week, myself and the Zatu team will be joining tons of Trading Card Games enthusiasts at the London Card Show and I am really looking forward to enjoy two exciting days of fun and events. I have a long list of things I want to do and people I want to meet including Kasia Brzezinska, one of the Concept Artists and Illustrators behind a number of Disney Lorcana cards including the recently revealed “Arthur, Wart” from the upcoming set “Shimmering Skies” that will release on the 9th of August.

Prior to this, Kasia illustrated “Binding Contract” in “Rise of the Floodborn”, “Helga Sinclair, Right‐Hand Woman” and “Helga Sinclair, Vengeful Partner” in “Into the Inklands” and “Namaari, Heir of Fang” in “Ursula's Return” set. All these cards are gorgeous and I am super excited to meet her in person during the show (and to have a few cards signed!). In the meantime, Kasia has been so nice to take some time to answer a few questions for us so we can get to know more about her art and her experience illustrating cards for Disney Lorcana.

KASIA

What is your favourite Disney Movie?

Lilo and Stitch! It has the perfect vibes, great music, a beautiful story and wonderful art to really level up the entire movie watching experience.

How was your experience illustrating for Disney Lorcana?

It has been really great! Every brief I have received has been fun and demanding, I get to draw characters I watched on TV when I was younger and it's been a pleasure working with the Art Directors. Also, the artists working on the project feel like a team even though we don't usually collaborate, it's really nice to get to know them and fan over their work. It's been a very surreal project to be a part of, as I've been working in animation and games before my work with Lorcana.

What is your favourite card among those you created for the game?

It has to be my emerald Helga - ''The Vengeful Partner''. I find her design extremely interesting and I won't lie, she was tough to draw! Her angularity is so different to other female characters, partially to the design language of Atlantis. I'm glad I got to draw her in a dynamic pose, with some swirly patterns in the back - a lot of different parts came together in this card for me to create a great overall experience!

What process do you go through to re-interpret a character for a card?

If I have the time, I love to watch the entire movie. You know, for the job. Which is still insane to me! Watching the movie helps me get a good understanding of the character within the plot as opposed to just looking up images online. I like to do some sketching that has nothing to do with the card, just to get to know the design of the character if I can.

Is there any hidden detail you added/ really wanted to add to any of your cards?

Not really, but now that's given me ideas I'll have to think about it if I get to do any cards in the future!!

Given the possibility, which Disney character you would love to illustrate in the future?

Oh, it's hard, because it's different to having a favourite character as opposed to a fun character to draw. For example, I love Lilo and Stitch, but I'm not sure I could do them justice, and I really enjoy just seeing their interpretations by other amazing artists. But, if ever possible, I would love to draw Ariel, Belle, Captain Amelia or Rapunzel (or any characters from Tangled)! I won't deny the princesses are a delight to draw, and the great art that's already out supports that I think.

Getting to know a bit more about Kasia's art was amazing and I am really looking forward to meet her at the London Card Show on the 3rd and 4th of August. I hope there will be a lot of fans coming to see her too but in the meantime you can also keep in touch with Kasia on her socials:
