Stonemaier Games made an announcement about their first new release of 2024, and it’s something we’re familiar with. Sort of. Wingspan is getting a new implementation, turning the humble bird into mighty dragons with a new game in the series, Wyrmspan. Designed by Connie Vogelmann of Apiary fame, art by Clementine Campardou and developed by Elizabeth Hargraves, Wyrmspan is a stand-alone spinoff of Wingspan, where 1-5 players will build a sanctuary for dragons by excavating caves, enticing dragons and exploring your habitats to gain benefits.
Whilst Wyrmspan has been inspired by Wingspan, the two are not compatible and several mechanisms have changed. For example, the turns are not limited by the action cubes you have, only your resources as you play your turn to completion. Additionally, the randomness of the food dice has been removed, instead leaving you to build your engine how you want. From reading the rulebook, it seems to be a heavier experience than Wingspan, giving experienced players familiarity and new choices to make.
Wyrmspan is due to be released in the first quarter of 2024, so expect to see it on shelves very soon.
