The oceans just got that big bigger with the 5 to 6 player extension of Seafarers. More land and islands to discover in a race of discovery.
Note, at this point you will need the base sets of Catan and Seafarers for this as well as the 5–6 player Catan extension. But it is all worth it for your larger playing group to get everyone out to sea.
Rule Additions
There are no new rule additions beyond that of the gaming sets already noted. You need to take the rules of all those sets into account when using this set.
One thing to note though is you do get a series of pre-set scenarios to set up here which is cool. Some of these scenarios have rules specific to that particular set up. So, check those out as there are some cool additions to note.
Why This Extension?
This extension isn’t the most stimulating set that you are likely to pick up in the Catan series. It allows for more players to get around your Catan Seafarers table top but that is it. However, you are going to need a pretty big table top. The base game of settlers occupies 37 hexes. That is 19 land hexes and 18 bordering ocean hexes. There are scenarios in this set that require 60 hexes of ocean and land and that does not factor in your scenario border making the overall board absolutely massive and visually very pleasing. It’s needed though, 6 players, potentially 234 wooden components on the board, it is big and a massive adventure.
Final Thoughts
This may not be the most exciting of extensions for Catan, but it is essential for getting Seafarers into your gaming group of 5 or 6 players and so definitely worth picking up. If nothing else, just to appreciate the size of the Catan maps beyond the standard game. It is worth having a copy of this tucked in your collection, just incase.
