2021 is probably not a year that many people enjoyed, self isolation and Coronavirus populated everyone’s thoughts. However, it was also the year Rolling Realms was first conceived by Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games. Initially put together as a print at home and play along, it was a great way to bring people together who otherwise couldn't. Rolling Realms was later released to retail and is in essence an infinitely scalable roll and write game. The original RR contained 12 “realms” (i.e. dry erase boards) from the Stonemaier catalogue of games. With simple yet compelling gameplay it was immensely popular. In Rolling Realms, one player rolls two dice and uses these numbers to fill in their realms to earn resources and score stars in a number of different ways.
Fast forward to 2023 and a number of additional promo realms have been released. It was recently announced that Rolling Realms Redux will soon be launched. Rolling Realms is a standalone game with a further 12 new realms which have been developed and inspired from popular games from other publishers. These 12 new realms are completely unique to Redux.
Redux can also be combined with the original Rolling Realms, doubling the amount of content. It still features the same core gameplay mentioned above, and whilst the games the realms have been based on have not been announced, they are sure to offer a unique twist on the gameplay. Stonemaier games surely have a hit on their hands here. The number of combinations in the original game was pretty large but with an additional 12 realms the replayability has just skyrocketed.
I am super excited for Redux. This will be on my radar for sure when it launches and I am likely to be grabbing this. It makes for a great quick playing solo game with a ton of replayability.
