Today's Board Game Spotlight piece is a big one as we take a look at TTR Rails & Sails, which is the latest edition in the worldwide success-story that is Ticket To Ride.
Overall, Days of Wonder have managed to sell over four million Ticket To Ride games worldwide - which is quite an achievement! We have had maps and train routes from all around the world included in these games over the years, but now TTR Rails & Sails adds something a little different...
The Game
TTR Rails & Sails takes the usual concept of the other Ticket To Ride games and takes it up onto a global scale - meaning that you'll now be moving across water! This means you can now create routes and travel the world to places such as Sydney and Los Angeles.
Just like with all Ticket To Ride games, players start with tickets in hand that show two cities, and over the course of the game they try to collect coloured cards, then claim routes on the game board with their coloured train and ship tokens, scoring points while doing so. When any player has six or fewer tokens in their supply, each player takes two more turns, then the game ends.
Players now also start their game with three harbours and if you build a route to a port city you can take an action during the game to place a harbour within that
TTR Rails & Sails comes with a double-sided board. One side is the map of world, whilst the other is the Great Lakes of North America.
The Publisher
Days of Wonder were formed back in 2002 and became the youngest publisher to win the Spiel des Jahres award in 2004, for the first release of Ticket To Ride. Since 2014 the company have been owned by board gaming giants Asmodee.
The group only release a small amount of new games each year and tend to focus on their core franchises, which includes huge board game such as Memoir 44, Quadropolis, Small World and of course Ticket To Ride.
This year's big release will be Yamatai, where players compete to build palaces, torii, and their own buildings in the land of Yamataï. This highly-anticipated game is available to pre-order right now on our online store.
The Designer
All of the games in the Ticket To Ride series have been designed by English board game designer, Alan R. Moon. Mr Moon has been designing games for over three decades and also won the Spiel des Jahres for Elfenland in 1998.
Moon has worked as a full-time freelance game designer for the last 17 years and has a huge catalogue of games under his belt. The first game that he published was Black Spy, which was released all the way back in 1981.
