Board Game Spotlight: Mansions of Madness

Mansions of Madness

A grim figure lurks the streets of Arkham and as such it could mean only one thing, another board game spotlight. This time we are shining our light on to Mansions of Madness Second Edition.

Mansions of Madness is a fully cooperative, app driven board game of horror and mystery set within the Cthulhu Mythos. During the game players will take the role of investigators attempting to complete one of four scenarios and to do this they will need to solve puzzles, collect tools and battle insanity.

The Game

Mansions of Madness Second Edition is the new app driven version of the previous game. The greatest change between editions being the introduction of the new app, which allows all the players to be investigators as the app takes the role of the new keeper.

This enables a whole new experience as the app plays atmospheric music and narrates the story as it unfolds, fully immersing you in the mystery at hand. The use of the app also ensures a much faster setting up time, as their are no fiddly stacks to deal with here. The tile system used for the game also means that a mystery will never be quite the same. Whether battling ghouls or solving puzzles, Mansions of Madness will truly test your resolve.

Players of the game's first edition are also rewarded. If you possess a copy you are able to have the original investigators, monsters and even the tiles factor in to the game's random set up - creating a truly unique experience each time.

Behind the Theme

The Cthulhu mythos is a fictional universe based on the work of American Horror writer H.P Lovecraft. Expanded further by a collection of different authors, the mythos explores many themes such as the complete irrelevance of mankind and that 'The most merciful thing in the world is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents."

Due to this many of the stories within the mythos focus on the protagonists battle against a creeping darkness and their unavoidable descend into madness.

Along with Cthulhu the stories hold a number of other 'Elder Gods' these include Hastur and Ithaqua.
