Today's spotlight takes us over to the Caribbean for the a look at the game, Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico is a game of constructing buildings and shipping goods so it was never going to blow your mind like the sunny island could, however this is one seriously solid game.
The Game
In Puerto Rico each player assumes the role of a colonial governor, who is trying to amass victory points in order to come out on top. Each turn players will select a role card from those present, as each role is selected all players will take the action associated with in, with the individual who choose that role receiving a privilege such as a discount for constructing.
The governor token, which decides on the first player each round, will also makes its way around the board so that all players have the chance to be the first player. Victory points are earned for construction and for selling goods and at the end of the game these victory points are all that matters.
The publisher
Rio Grande games is a board game publisher based in New Mexico who specialise in translating foreign language euro style games. In 1995 Jay Tummelson started working for Mayfair Games and they began importing German-style board games for sale without doing any localisation.
Tummelson soon suggested that they include an English translation with the game, and that they completely localise the game for American audiences. A few years following this he decided to found Rio Grande Games, a company fully dedicated to this side of the business and since then they have published 350 titles and as such had a huge impact on gaming in the United States.
Other games in their catalogue include Race for the Galaxy, Dominion and El Grande.
The Designer
Puerto Rico was designed by German-style board game designer Andreas Seyfarth. The 54-year-old also designed Manhattan, Thurn and Taxis, each of which won him the coveted Spiel des Jahres awards in 1994 and 2006 respectively.
